Roxana DONALDSON, Brusies, mixed technique on paper, 15×21 cm
- In Bruises (No To Abuse Against Women, International Mail Art Exhibition, Galateca, Bucharest, 2021) I imagined a visual discourse about the abuse exercised on women. The works use botanical symbols (the flower and the tree) as a metaphor for the pain and cognitive dissonance felt by physically or emotionally abused women. The texts inserted into the image represent possible fragments of emotions and thoughts that burst forth from the traumatized female subconscious in an attempt to stop the pain, while the colors purple, pink, red, brown and blue were chosen to symbolize ecchymoses (traces of blows on the skin). The flowers in Bruises, reminiscent of children’s drawings, symbolize the difficult reconciliation between violence, abuse and the intimate universe of feminine emotion.
